Not long after we arrived in Palmyra I joined the local Lions Club. I thought I could make connections for the church and do some service in the community. It’s been a delightful experience.
This club was originally founded by a small group of men, including Willard Bean, a missionary caretaker of the Smith Farm. He served as the club president for several years. Almost every current Lion knows about him, and respects him.
We do lots of service in the area. We keep a stretch of highway clean, we gather used glasses to be used in third world countries, we have an eye exam machine we use at schools to determine if kids need to see an optometrist, provide hearing aids to those who can’t afford them.
Last week we ran the Village Easter egg hunt. I was given a tub of 500 plastic candy-filled eggs to distribute in an area of the park designated for 9-11 year-olds. I hid two bars—one gold and one silver. The kids who found those received special prizes.
What fun!
