New Hill Cumorah Visitors Center

Book of Mormon Translations Wall
Book of Mormon Translations Wall

We’ve been enjoying serving once or twice a week at the retooled Hill Cumorah Visitors Center. Rather than serving as tour guides, we welcome the visitors, answer questions, give information about walking to the top of the hill, and so forth. We also drive a golf cart to transport to the top those who are unable to make the walk. It’s a very relaxed assignment.

One of the joys of serving there is that we get to view the displays and ponder the what they teach.

I think the visitors center has some distinct messages:

  • Jesus Christ is the center of it all. The rotunda features a sculpture of the Savior inviting people to feel the prints of the nails on His hands and on His feet. Two more sculptures are yet to arrive that depict Jesus inviting all of the children to come to Him, and inviting the sick and infirm to come and be healed by Him.  The visitors are included in the invitation to feel the prints, as the sculpture is intended to be touched.

  • The Book of Mormon points us to Jesus Christ. The “Book of Mormon Experience” display allows people to receive a random page of the Book of Mormon and highlight the references to the Savior on the page. Then they can write a little about what the page means to them.

  • The ever expanding reach of the Book of Mormon. One wall is dedicated to showing the 122 languages into which the Book of Mormon has been translated. The revolving display quotes the title page of the book, “Jesus Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations” in each of the languages.

  • Reinforcing the worldwide reach of the Book of Mormon, a digital display shows art work from around the world related to the stories of the Book of Mormon.

  • The significance of the events that occurred on the Hill Cumorah. Beautiful original paintings by Michael Mahm and Linda Curley Christensen depict Moroni burying the gold plates, Joseph viewing the plates on the hill for the first time, obtaining then them.

What a grand opportunity we have to serve here. But our time is getting very short.
