Special Sunday

Early in the week I gave a Smith Farm/Sacred Grove tour to a group of seven from various states. Among the group was a mother and her 11-year-old son from California. He’s a triplet and each of the three boys were given a one-on-one trip with their mother. One chose Hawaii, one Alaska, and Bo chose Palmyra and NYC. Bo had just been ordained a deacon last month.

After the tour I asked what they would do next, and they said they’d tour the Grandin Press next, then go to the Whitmer Farm the next day—Sunday. I also asked where they planned to attend church so I could give the meeting times. When I told them we’d be speaking in the Fayette Ward which meets at the Whitmer Farm, the mother said, “That settles it. See you there.”

The sacrament meeting starts at ten, then we were to serve at the Whitmer Farm starting at one. As we drove the forty minutes to the farm, the conditions were pretty bad—Icy and snowy.

Once we were about half way there, we learned that sacrament meeting at the Fayette Ward was canceled due to the weather so we didn’t need to speak. But Bo and his mother wouldn’t know that it was canceled so we continued on our way.

Bo and his mother made it for the sacrament meeting that didn’t happen. Bishop Thibert was there in case someone didn’t get the word, so while Kathy gave Bo and his mom the tour, Bishop and I prepared the sacrament. After the tour Bishop Thibert and I blessed and Bo passed the sacrament--very special. It felt significant because this place, the Peter Whitmer Farm, is where the Church was organized in 1830 and where the sacrament was first administered in this dispensation.

We had a very sweet experience.
